The 2006 Chinese Crested Club Championship Show judged by Diana Bowdler Townsend

I was very honored to be invited to judge the Chinese Crested Dog Club Championship Show this year, a show I previously judged in 1995. I was pleased to see several foreign visitors, including Mr. John Meyer from San Francisco, who flew over especially to see the show.

I found some very nice dogs for my top awards, but as it was a very large entry of 100 dogs, and 144 total entries, there were some very ordinary ones as well. I was disappointed to see several bad mouths, coarse skulls, big round eyes and terrier fronts. Here in the UK, we tend to put far more emphasis on conformation, rather than showmanship. Remember, even a badly constructed dog can “show its head off” but that does not make it a good Chinese Crested. Toy dogs still must still move soundly. To do this, they must have a correct lay of shoulder, level topline, and well angulated hindquarters.

Here in England, we have no Champion Class. To earn a top award, a dog must defeat all existing champions in the Open Class.

I selected my Best Dog and eventual Best In Show from the Junior Dog class. Although he is only 15 months old, I see he is already a champion. He is a super dog, with everything I was looking for- wonderful head type and expression, great neck and shoulders, front legs well under his chest, a level topline, very well-muscled quarters, correct tail carriage, over all wonderful condition, including an excellent mouth.

My Best Bitch came from Sweden. She is a lovely, feminine version of the dog. I loved her head and expression, nice length of foreface, well angulated fore and aft, excellent skin condition. She moved and showed to perfection.

A hotly contested class here in the UK is the prize for Best Puppy. This also went to Sweden, to a ten month old dog that has everything in the right places. A wonderful extroverted temperament, he enjoyed his day out and promises to mature into a lovely adult. I shall watch his career with interest.
